Heather Dixon is a devoted wife, mother, and woman of God. She is an active volunteer in Fort Worth for other outreach organizations, her church home and serves on two PTA boards for both of her children’s schools.
She began working full-time with the homeless in 2010, while attending college to obtain her degree in drug and alcohol counseling. During that time, her volunteer efforts went from ten hours a week to forty plus hours weekly. She felt a calling to front-line ministry working with people feeling broken. Those hidden in the woods. Those often not seen.
Heather has a strong connection to people living with hopelessness and emotional trauma because of her past, which included several years of childhood abuse and neglect, parental drug and alcohol addiction, and being a constant runaway teen. As a result, she became homeless as a youth, living in her vehicle in the woods, and dependent on drugs. Heather was in and out of jail from age 16 to 20, receiving four felonies by the age of 20. Needless to say, her uncontrollable childhood situations, and her bad choices, left Heather in a state of deep depression, anger, lack of self-care, and hopelessness.
Heather Dixon's heart for homeless, addicted, broken, and neglected people is centered on serving. In addition to walking life with our homeless friends as a dependable, sincere colleague, she invites a community of volunteers to serve alongside her. Heather's desire is to advocate for those whose voices often go unheard and to show love to those God places before us. And in some cases, to love broken people to Christ.
Even though it was many years ago, Heather knows a lot about the hardships our homeless friends face. Heather will never forget where she came from and the deep sense of gratitude she feels every day for the mercy of our Lord. Heather was blessed to not only just survive, but after starting a relationship with Christ, she learned He could still use her to accomplish Kingdom work. Heather states she finally felt healing and that after years of being called "trash", that she was the opposite. She discovered she was a daughter of the most-high, a treasure and that life did not have to feel.
Amen & Glory to God!
